How to Start a Bearing Import Business in South America (Step-by-Step Guide for 2026)

The bearing import business in South America is highly profitable — margins of 40–80% are common for established importers. With FTAs reducing or eliminating duties in Peru, Chile, and Colombia, and Brazil's massive market despite higher tariffs, the opportunity has never been better.

Step 1: Pick your entry market. Peru and Chile have 0% bearing import duty under their China FTAs — lowest barrier to entry. Colombia has 5-10% duty and a strong moto-taxi culture. Brazil has the largest market but 14-18% duty + ICMS — start with the lower-tariff countries, then expand to Brazil once you have volume.

Step 2: Start with a focused product list. Don't import 50 models on your first order. Start with 5-8 high-velocity models: 6301-2RS, 6302-2RS, 6202-2RS, 6205-2RS C3, UCP205, 30206. These cover 70% of motorcycle and agricultural demand across South America.

Step 3: Order a trial shipment. A good supplier will accept 50 pcs minimum per model. Total first order: 400–500 pcs, value $300–500. Ship by DHL Express — arrives in 5–7 days door-to-door, no customs complications for small-value shipments.

Step 4: Test the bearings before selling. Check: smooth rotation, correct dimensions (calipers), visible grease through seal, no rust or damage. Share the test results with your first customers — Brazilian and Colombian buyers especially value transparency.

Step 5: Scale with sea freight. Once you have 3–4 months of sales data, place a sea freight order (1-2 CBM, about 3,000–5,000 pcs).
